How should I study this course?

To follow the course lectures, you should study the lecture slides in advance according
to the lecture timetable.

To pass the oral examination, you will be need to answer 3 questions from the list
of possible questions
on the course web page.

You print the list and check each and every question against the lecture slides and try to answer it. Write down an answer to the question and bring this to the consultations. If a question is not clear, we should arrange the consultations in my office. Please contact me via e-mail ().

Of course, you should come with pre-prepared questions and not with something like "explain the entire chapter in English".

I propose that you to organize yourself in a group and study the course together.

LABORATORY COURSE
Where are the laboratory courses?

Laboratory courses take place in the Laboratory of Electrical Circuits (LEV - Laboratorij za Elektronska Vezja), located on the second floor of new Faculty building. Exit the elevator, go right and proceed to the end of the hallway. Laboratory is on the left side.

When will the laboratory courses take place?

Check the laboratory course schedule.

How is the laboratory course organized?

Students are organized in groups. The Laboratory of Electrical Circuits LEV has 9 workplaces and can host maximum 18 students at a time. Due to this limitation, all non-regular students (repetitors etc. ) must apply prior to taking the laboratory course.

When does the laboratory course start?

Laboratory course starts according to schedule on the hour (XX:00 not XX:15).

When is the laboratory course schedule released?

Laboratory course schedule is generally released at the end of October, as soon as the semester timetable is finalized.

How do I prepare for a laboratory course assignment?
  • Check the laboratory course assignment text.
  • Print and read current assignment.
  • During laboratory course assignment you should have a printed version.
  • Can I do the laboratory course assignments on my laptop?

Yes. We encourage the installation of Xilinx ISE environment. In fact, the whole introductory laboratory assignment is related to installation of Xilinx ISE.

What should I bring to the laboratory course?
  • Lecture notes.
  • Printed text of assignment. The assignment text should be printed on A4, without size reduction of any kind.
  • Optional USB key for storing your assignment results
(if you forget one or you don't have one, does not matter, because assignment results have to be transferred to the course server).
Are the laboratory course assignments mandatory?

Of course. Your presence is confirmed with your signature to the checklist at the end of each assignment. Before you can take the written examination, all the assignments have to be fulfilled.

What if I miss a laboratory course?

At the end of schedule, there is a reserve laboratory course marked "REZ" if you missed one laboratory course. It's possible, but not recommended, because you'll be doing the laboratory assignment by yourself, which is much harder to achieve.

  • MIDTERM EXAMINATION
How does a midterm examination look like?

Four assignments, comprised of course book examples or solved course problems.
Check the archive of old solved examples of midterm examinations.

What is the scope of first midterm examination?

The scope of first midterm examination are the combinatorial circuits, noted in lecture notes summary.

What is the scope of second midterm examination?

The rest of lecture notes summary with emphasis on sequential circuits.

When is the first midterm examination?

First or second week in December.

When is the second midterm examination?

At the end of winter semester (in January).

Who can attend the midterm examination?

All regular (i.e. enrolled in the third year, first stage of Bologna studies) students can attend the midterm examination. All others attend the written examination.

What is the midterm examination criteria?

Arithmetic mean of both midterm examination grades of equal or more than 50% is considered a pass of written examination.
Students which pass a written examination can go directly to the oral examination.

Do we have to attend both midterm examinations?

It is imperative that you satisfy the midterm examination criteria: You may get 100% at first midterm exam, but still have to attend the second midterm examination, which you can fail with 0%. Arithmetic mean of such result is still 50%. Such result is highly improbable, but still admissible.

What is allowed on midterm examination?

On midterm examination or written part of examination you can have your own cheat sheet: A single A4 cheat sheet with formulas, tables and figures. You may have figures, which explain the significance of a given formula. No solved examples are allowed on the cheat sheet. The basis for cheat sheet are your lecture notes.

THE CHEAT SHEET HAS TO BE HAND WRITTEN
AS A PROOF OF YOUR PREPARATION TO THE EXAMINATION!

COPIES, SCANS AND OTHER FORMS OF AUTOMATIC PRINTOUTS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

The point of cheat sheet is that you write the formulas during lectures on a separate sheet. This way you should know what you've written and where you've written it.

I passed both midterm examinations. What now?

Now you may proceed to the oral part of examination. Those who passed both midterm examinations have to apply to any oral examination of a given term in current year (i.e. till September of current school year) if you have completed all laboratory course assignments. Check your laboratory course status.

What if I failed the midterm examinations?

Apply to the written part of examination if you have completed all laboratory course assignments. Check your status.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION
How does a written examination look like?

Four assignments, which encompass whole syllabus. The assignments are based on lectures.
Four assignments, of which first two are related to combinatorial problems, the last two are related to sequential problems. The contents is like 1 & 2 midterm combined: 2 assignments from 1. midterm exam and 2 assignments from 2. midterm exam.

    When are the exams?

All the exams are announced on the course web page. Depending on student interest (at least 5 students), there may be an additional intermediate exam in April. Send me an e-mail and we will arrange the intermediate exam.

What is allowed on written exam?

Same rules apply as for the midterm examinations.

Where will the results of written part of examination be announced?

    On course web page.

How long do you need to grade the written examinations?

Normally the exams are graded within a week.

    ORAL EXAMINATION
How does an oral examination look like?

Oral examination consists of three questions, chosen from a list of possible questions. The questions are exactly the same as listed.

    What are the grading criteria?

Starting point for all examination is the grade of written examination. Based on this grade you are given both questions as well as VHDL programming assignment on the oral examination.

      Grading criterion is:
      • 50-60% → 6
      • 60-70% → 7
      • 70-80% → 8
      • 80-90% → 9
      • 90-100% → 10
I don't know the answer to one question. Can it be replaced?

Yes. However, the "price" for that is one grade less. Of course, if your grade of written examination is between  50-60%, then this results in a negative grade of examination.
